Sixteen contractors recognized for quality, craftsmanship, and safety

SAN DIEGO, November 8, 2018 - Merit shop contractors working on projects ranging from retail stores to retirement communities, military installations, hospitals, schools, libraries, and office buildings were honored for their work at the 2018 Associated Builders and Contractors San Diego Chapter Excellence in Construction Awards. This program recognizes projects built with exceptional quality, design, craftsmanship, and safety by ABC members.

Projects were judged by an independent panel of judges based on a set criteria of safety, innovation, quality of construction, and owner satisfaction.

The evening’s top awards were presented to Stronghold Engineering, winner of Top Project by a General Contractor for the San Jose McEnery Convention Center Exhibit Halls Lighting and Ceiling Upgrades; and Helix Electric, winner of Top Project by a Subcontractor for its work on Sea World Aquatica.

“Shining a spotlight on these exceptional construction projects achieves two vital goals,” said Shandon Harbour, ABC San Diego CEO. “First, we demonstrate how skilled merit-shop construction professionals deliver the highest quality of work on time and on budget. Second, we share best practices for the entire industry to learn and benefit from on future projects, raising the bar for our entire industry.”

Stronghold Engineering, Inc. and CannonDesign were awarded the $20 million San Jose Convention Center Exhibit Hall Lighting and Ceiling Upgrades project to keep the facility competitive for large scale events. Technologically sophisticated clients attracted to the Silicon Valley venue wanted a modern looking facility that could accommodate large-scale complex rigging, high-quality sound, and customizable lighting to highlight their products. Stronghold’s completed project upgraded the lighting including a fully customizable lighting package. The new sound system and new acoustic upgrades offer a rich sound experience. This successfully completed project addresses a core functionality of the Convention Center and helps to position the City of San Jose to maintain its recent and growing competitive advantage in hosting large-scale, high-tech events and conventions.
