Bergelectric, HPS Mechanical Win 2018 National Excellence in Construction Awards

Long Beach, Calif. - Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) honored two San Diego Chapter members with national “Excellence in Construction” Awards at the 28th annual Excellence in Construction® Awards during ABC Convention 2018 in Long Beach, California this week.

Bergelectric won an Eagle Award, construction’s highest honor, in the Electrical/Commercial Project Less than $2 Million category for WeWork B Street. Forty-eight Eagle Awards are presented in individual categories, making it a truly significant achievement.

HPS Mechanical won a Pyramid Award, honoring significant projects, in the Mechanical/All Projects Over $10 Million category for UCSD’s Mesa Nueva Graduate Housing. Only two projects per category qualify for this level of recognition.

The winning projects are among the 100 projects honored this year, collectively worth $2.6 billion.

“I am continually inspired by the amazing talent these ABC members and their employees display every day in the communities they build. It is an honor to recognize their commitment to world-class safety, superior craftsmanship and cutting-edge innovation,” said 2018 ABC National Chair George R. Nash Jr., director of preconstruction at Branch & Associates in Herndon, Virginia. “The scope of this year’s Excellence in Construction award-winning projects, from a science museum and luxury apartment buildings to a polyethylene facility and sports stadiums, proves that if it can be built, the merit shop can build it, on time and on budget.

WeWork B Street was a multi-level tenant improvement project on six floors of a downtown San Diego high-rise building. All six of the original floors were completely cleared and converted into office spaces, meeting rooms, and a cafe. Bergelectric’s scope of work consisted of new electrical installation on all floors including 500 new light fixtures, a new state-of-the-art lighting control system, transformers and much more on all six floors. Bergelectric was asked to complete the project in only 14 weeks.

With an extremely condensed construction schedule, tight construction quarters on multiple levels, multiple trades on-site, and limited space to store materials, a concise project management approach was crucial not only to keep up with the fast-tracked schedule, but also to assure the high level of quality that Bergelectric is known for.

Despite the challenges presented on this fast-paced project, Bergelectric completed the project on time and under budget with zero recordable safety incidents, continuing its “Work Safe Live Safe” philosophy.

"We are very excited, very honored," said Steve Stroder, Regional Vice President - San Diego of Bergelectric. "This is Bergelectric's first Eagle Award ever. This was a challenging project with a lot of work in very little time on a condensed schedule. We worked several shifts around the clock." Stroder said the Eagle Award trophy may be added to the mural on Bergelectric's building exterior to celebrate the achievement in the near future.

HPS Mechanical, Inc. contributed key work on the University of California San Diego’s newest housing project, Mesa Nueva. It was recently completed and occupied by students at the start of the Fall 2017 quarter, With the addition of 1,350 new beds, the residential community is one of the largest graduate and professional student housing programs in the University of California system and one of the biggest in the country.

In addition to being on track for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Efficient Design) Gold Certification, the new units answer a demand for both housing space and a greater sense of community for students. “Development of these student housing projects presents an opportunity for UC San Diego to meet our on-campus housing goals and address the demand from our students to live on campus,” said Mark Cunningham, assistant vice chancellor of Housing, Dining Hospitality. Mesa Nueva is designed to create a greater sense of community between the campus and the graduate and professional students.

The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition that honors both general and specialty contractors for innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.

A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year's panel included representatives from the Building Owners and Managers Association International, the Smithsonian Facilities Construction Division, the Construction Management Association of America, Engineering News-Record, Design-Build Institute of America and various construction-related firms nationwide.
