ABC San Diego member I.E.-Pacific, Inc., brought home honors from the 27th annual Excellence in Construction® Awards during National Workforce Week in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. ABC honored 98 projects collectively worth $2.4 billion with National Eagle and Pyramid Awards.

I.E.-Pacific, Inc. received its National Eagle Award in the category “Federal Government/Military, Less than $10 million” for its work on the P-947 MH-60 Trainer Facility, a ground-up addition to the existing Helicopter Training Building 1472 at Naval Base Coronado.

The project also received a “Greener Tomorrow Award,” which is a special recognition given to select Eagle Award winning projects which used sustainable best practices; the project met stringent Low Impact Development requirements and included a cistern to conserve water along with a stormwater capture system to prevent pollution runoff into San Diego Bay.K

“While I’m proud of the finished product, this recognition is about something even more valuable, the innovation and teamwork needed to complete this project successfully,” said Diane Koester-Byron, President of I.E.-Pacific, Inc. “This was a true partnership between design, construction, and the government in the form of the U.S. Navy. We successfully used an “Early Start of Construction” (ESOC) design process, giving us extra time to meet with the government field team early, get to know all the participants and start work with a proactive attitude.

As a result, Koester-Byron said I.E.-Pacific was able to successfully work around environmental restrictions in place because of the Least Tern breeding cycle, avoiding a three-and-a-half month prohibition in heavy construction activities to meet the client’s timetable.

The existing facility could no longer support the growing need for additional trainers and their frequent use. I.E.-Pacific, Inc and its entire team of architects, engineers and subcontractors including nine ABC member merit shop subcontractors were able to deliver a facility to the United States Navy complementing its existing facility and increasing training capacity for Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron, San Diego.

I.E.-Pacific, Inc. successfully overcame several challenges including duplicating the design and look of the original facility, while providing the latest mechanical, fire protection and electrical systems. The design also met energy requirements and maintained badly needed parking space.

The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition that honors both general and specialty contractors for innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost. A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year's panel included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, the Construction Users Roundtable and the National Association of Women in Construction and Higher Education.
