San Diego, Calif., November 18, 2016 - Twenty merit shop contractors working on projects ranging from auto dealerships to military facilities, parks and ports of entry, hospitals, schools, libraries, and office buildings were honored for their work at the 2016 Associated Builders and Contractors San Diego Chapter Excellence in Construction Awards. This program recognizes projects built with exceptional quality, design, craftsmanship, and safety by ABC members.

“Behind each of these awards are extraordinary men and women who are building San Diego and building our nation’s future,” said Scott Crosby, ABC San Diego CEO. “The honors belong to them both as individuals and as teams working together. It’s our privilege to recognize their high quality work at a time when the need for freedom of opportunity for skilled merit-shop construction professionals in our nation is greater than ever before.”

The evening’s top awards were presented to A&D General Contracting, winner of Top Project by a General Contractor for the new Entry Control Gate 5 at MCRD San Diego; and Helix Electric, winner of Top Project by a Subcontractor for its work on the new NBC7 television studios.

Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego welcomes more visitors than any other military base in the United States. In an average year, 262,000 people visit MCRD, many of them family and friends attending boot camp graduations weekly on Fridays. Entry Control Facility (ECF) Gate 5, the Main Gate admitting people onto MCRD San Diego at Washington Street and Pacific Highway is the Marine Corps’ literal and figurative “front door.” A&D Construction turned over the Main Gate on schedule and on budget June 30, 2016 despite unforeseen challenges including contaminated soils, relocation of a major water line without losing service, and the need to meet stringent restrictions during project construction while working with multiple agencies including the Port of San Diego, San Diego Airport Authority, City of San Diego, San Diego Fire Department, and Caltrans.

Larry Bouchard, Chief Operating Officer for A&D, said the partnership between government and contractor succeeded due to a keen commitment to a “Project First” focus. “We went through our fair share of passionate discussions, but they were always smoothed with a ‘what’s best for the project?’ focus that was quite collaborative.”

Receiving the award for Top Project by a Subcontractor on behalf of Helix Electric, the NBC7 television studios project breaks new ground for broadcasting technology and facility design and construction. Among the most advanced broadcast centers in the country, the stunning state-of-the-art broadcast facility is 52,000 square-feet. The two-story, modern open-space design-features a first-of-its-kind, 4,000 multi-screen video wall, state-of- the-art news sets, production studios, and two control rooms that contain advanced audio and video production systems to create news and entertainment programing on-air and digitally. NBC7’s new station was distinctively designed to be on the leading-edge of technology while surpassing energy-efficient design expectations.

Helix Electric, which provided the complete design-assist for the electrical infrastructure of this innovative facility, fostered a strong relationship with the client and owner, shared a commitment to safety and its forward-thinking approach contributed to this complex project being delivered on time and under budget.

San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate was honored as ABC’s Elected Official of the Year. Sherry Yarbrough, Executive Director, ABC San Diego Training Trust, was honored for her 17 years of leadership of the Apprenticeship Training Academy.

The awards dinner at The Prado Balboa Park was presented by title sponsor Nuera; master event sponsors Barney and Barney and Balfour Beatty; reception sponsor Casper Company; award sponsors Bergelectric, Enterprise Fleet Management, and Sass Electric; dessert sponsors Good and Roberts, Stronghold Engineering, and Cacy Electric; valet parking sponsors AKTCPA, Rowan Electric, A&D General Contracting; and centerpiece sponsors Tectonics and Bilbro Construction.
