New Energy Means
New Opportunity

Last week the San Diego City Council voted to approve the formation of a Joint Powers Authority to oversee the creation and management of a new energy utility, known as Community Choice Energy. History was made as the cities of Escondido, La Mesa, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, and San Diego decided to leave behind the old way of doing business and create this regional partnership that will forever change the San Diego region.

I encourage you to read the article San Diego City Council takes the leap into community choice energy located in the What We’re Reading section of the newsletter.

I participated in and testified at the City Council meeting in support of the resolution.

My comments to the City Council, however, were not merely asking them to move forward with the JPA. I urged the Council members, as this issue evolves from discussion to implementation, to have lengthy discussions about who will build the projects associated with CCA. In my testimony, I stated that ABC members and apprentices are ready, willing and able to do the work. And I emphasized that ABC San Diego is ready to be creative and collaborative in competing for the work.

Here's an excerpt of my testimony to the City Council:

"We think every San Diegan should have the ability to work on this project. Union apprentices and ABC apprentices – side-by-side - there is enough work for all of us and we can work on these projects together. Let this be a model for how we can all work together on CCA projects and other large projects throughout the region so we all win and we all succeed together.”

The ABC San Diego Board and I have been working on this new strategy that we believe is needed to ensure that our members have the opportunity to participate in the region’s transformative projects. This is the message I will be sharing at public hearings and private meetings.

San Diego will have a new source of energy. And it lines up nicely with the new energy at ABC San Diego.
