POWAY, Calif., January 19, 2018— Associated Builders and Contractors joined leading construction industry organizations in partnership with Go Build California, a new statewide campaign launched to promote workforce development and mentorship in the construction industry.
“The construction industry faces a critical shortage of skilled construction professionals, which threatens to limit our economic recovery and prosperity,” said ABC San Diego President & CEO Shandon Harbour. “Labor shortages are the number one issue affecting the construction industry as we enter 2018. With the potential of federal infrastructure investment increasing employment opportunities, we must take action now.”
Harbour said ABC’s partnership with Go Build California highlights its continued commitment to enhancing the industry’s talent pool by highlighting training and career pathways across the state. “Talented, ambitious young Californians need to realize a college degree is not the only path to a successful career, and Go Build California will help to highlight that the skilled trades are an honorable, viable, long-term career path.”
Go Build is a comprehensive, labor-neutral workforce development initiative seeking to enhance the image of the construction industry and inform young people, parents, and educators about the about career opportunities in the skilled trades. This all-inclusive approach brings together employers, associations, contractors, training providers, apprenticeship programs and workforce development organizations across the state.
ABC and its San Diego Chapter joins other leading statewide industry organizations, including the AGC Construction Education Foundation (AGC CEF), the workforce development arm of the Associated General Contractors of California (AGC) California Homebuilding Foundation (CAHF), Sacramento Regional Builders Exchange (SRBX) Education Foundation, and Western Electrical Contractors Association (WECA).
“Go Build California will do more than just publicize the problem – it’s a collaborative approach in actively closing the skills gap to provide critical recruitment resources,” said Go Build Executive Director Ryan Dwyer. “To change hearts and minds – and ultimately dispel misperceptions about the industry – we must effectively engage, inform and inspire the next generation.”
Recently, the national Go Build America campaign launched with an enhanced website and new recruiting tools for employers and associations, while incumbent workers can search for jobs with contractors to fill skilled trade positions. Go Build California intends to bring this legacy home to the Golden State to help it address the ongoing labor shortages.
With support from industry partners, launching the new Go Build California website is the next phase in bolstering California’s pipeline of tradesmen and women. The full Go Build California campaign and website will launch in February.
