ELECTRICAL CERTIFICATION

Please Click Here for a Very Important Message Regarding Certification Testing for September 2008

Effective January 1st, 2006, the only persons who may perform work as general electrician, residential electrician or fire/life safety technicians for contractors licensed as Class C-10 electrical contrators and make electrical connections over 100 volt-ampers are those who have been certified by the State of California, or are an apprentice registered in a state approved electrical apprenticeship program, or a worker who has registered as an electrician trainee and is enrolled in a state approved electrician trainee program.

As of January 1, 2006, an electrician must either have passed the state exam or be registered with the state and enrolled in a state approved apprenticeship electrician trainee program or indentured in a state approved apprenticeship program, in order to continue working legally in the State of California.

The deadline to become certified for the two additional classifications, voice-data-video technician and non-residential lighting electricians was January 1, 2008.

Electrical Certification:

The State of California says you have to have it,

and ABC can help you get it

Electricians who engage in the connection of electrical devices of 100 volt-amps or more and work for licensed C-10 contractors in the State of California are required by law to be certified.   Those employees who do not yet have the necessary hours of electrical work experience to sit for the certification exam must be registered apprentices or registered with the state as an Electrical Trainee.  If you are a licensed C-10 contractor, then you do not have to be certified, but your employees DO

With a few exceptions, your electricians with the requisite work experience must pass a computerized test administered by the state and become certified.  Electrical Trainees must officially register with the state and are required to enroll in an approved school.  Trainees must complete 150 hours of classroom training annually until they acquire the work hours to sit for the electrical certification exam.  Apprentices, who attend school as a part of their training, are exempt from certification until they graduate.

San Diego Associated Builders and Contractors is an approved training provider for both apprenticeship and electrical trainees in the general electrician and fire, life, safety areas.  ABC electrical apprentices and trainees receive comprehensive classroom training and are prepared to take this exam and obtain their certification.

Once certified, the state requires that electricians obtain 32 hours of continuing education in order to re-certify every three years.  So, in addition to educating the newer apprentice or trainee, ABC regularly offers Electrical Re-Certification Classes which satisfy the continuing education requirements.   Classes are held at the ABC facility in Poway.

Associated Builders and Contractors’ electrical program helps contractors fulfill certification requirements by providing apprenticeship and trainee programs which are approved by the State of California as well as classes that meet continuing education requirements.
